CICERO EVOLVES INTO HISPANIC GOP STRONGHOLD

Republicans have controlled the town since Al Capone’s days, back in the 1920s, when Capone lived in Cicero’s Hawthorne Arms Hotel (which still exists), and ran Chicago’s mob and Cicero’s Republican party. Republican Town Supervisor Joe Virruso won 8,967-5,810. Full Article...

HAS ALDERMAN GRANATO MADE 1ST WARD A "PARADISE"?

According to Alderman Jesse Granato’s campaign staff, Chicago’s 1st Ward experienced a veritable epiphany in 1995 – the year that Granato became alderman. On Feb. 25, Granato had 56 fewer votes than Flores, and Flores missing winning the seat outright, without a runoff, by just 79 votes, because a third candidate, Howard Crawford, got 214 votes. If Granato’s majority gets any barer, he’s history. Despite that armada of clout, Granato got 3,330 votes, to Flores’ 3,386, and Crawford’s 214; voter turnout in the ward was just 26 percent. Granato got 4,664 votes in the 1999 runoff, and 3,870 votes in the 1995 runoff. Full Article...

HDO'S PERFORMANCE NOT STELLAR IN HISPANIC WARDS

The HDO usually crushed their opposition. Under the 2001 remap, Chicago has nine wards with Hispanic majorities. The HDO’s excuse is that the HDO, figuring that Colom was a cinch, sent its workers into the 30th Ward. 30th Ward (Near Northwest Side, Cragin, Avondale): In this new ward, HDO-backed Ariel Reboyras obliterated his opposition. In 1999, Granato beat anti-HDO Cynthia Soto in the runoff by 360 votes (4,664-4,304). The HDO will flood the ward with precinct manpower, but Flores is favored to win. The 6th, 15th and 21st are South Side black-majority wards. Full Article...

AREA ALDERMANIC INCUMBENTS AVOID "COLLATERAL DAMAGE"

On Feb. 25, Northwest Side Aldermen Pat Levar (45th), Brian Doherty (41st), Tom Allen (38th), Gene Schulter (47th) and Berny Stone (50th) achieved that goal. Lyons’ workers were relentless in identifying pro-Levar voters. 47th Ward: This was a grudge match between incumbent Schulter and ward Democratic Committeeman Ed Kelly. Stone got 76 percent of the vote. In 1999, Stone was unopposed, and got 7,445 votes; in 1995, Stone faced two foes, and got 5,676 votes (57 percent); in 1991, Stone faced a single strong opponent, and got 8,654 votes (56 percent).
