50th Ward: Stone says that he’s doing a great job and is getting better. Morris scoffed at Stone’s self-praise. By slicing Stone’s vote to under 6,000. The Stone/Democratic base vote averages around 7,500. Laurino dismissed Klich’s charges as “ludicrous. "FIRST FATHER-IN-LAW" MELL BECOMES A CAMPAIGN ISSUE
The ward adjoins Mell’s 33rd Ward, and Mell dispatched his troops to elect Colom, and to re-elect her in 1999. Mell, and Mell’s exercise of political power, is an issue in this year’s aldermanic races in the 35th and 38th wards. Colom vociferously rejects Colon’s allegations. “I appreciate his (Mell’s) support,” said Colom. Hornowski ran for alderman in the old 30th Ward in 1991, and lost – getting no help from Mell. WILL GOV. BLAGOJEVICH "THINK OUTSIDE THE BUN"?
That means he must govern with extreme fiscal restraint, and not raise the state’s income or sales taxes. The state’s 2003 fiscal budget of $52.5 billion is already in deficit. That means doling out plenty of state jobs to loyal Democrats, plenty of state contracts to loyal contributors, and plenty of state spending on pet liberal projects. That means raising taxes. Is not the job of the alderman to provide ward services? A Democrat, Natarus is closely allied with veteran ward Democratic Committeeman George Dunne. Natarus will squeak in by less than 1,000 votes. 44th Ward (Lakeview, stretching from Belmont to Lawrence, east of Damen): The ward’s gay population, estimated to be about 35 percent of the ward’s total population, is all aflutter. 48th Ward (Uptown, between roughly Addison and Foster): Longtime Alderman Helen Shiller, first elected in 1987, has long had great dreams for her ward. JAKES' "BLACK AGENDA" INSURES HUGE DALEY WIN
Chicago has 20 black-majority wards, which are represented by 19 blacks and one white (the 18th Ward’s Tom Murphy). Ditto in the 34th Ward, where pro-Daley black incumbent Carrie Austin has six foes, and all are being challenged; she will win easily.
